another resurrection.
I finally got my hands on a vox ultrasonic - needed to have most of the switches replaced so the effects would actually work.
The wah is still a bit shit though. Had a poke around today and I think I have found a solution (very short ranged wah, I think it's something to do with the conductive coating in the wah mechanism, failing that I guess I'll have to buy a new mechanism (and original handle! woo!) from RhoadsMusic.)
Sadly, I'm down to two guitars though. GuitarWorks Phantom and the Ultrasonic!

If I already hadn't 7 vintage vox guitars and I was to buy a new one, it would be this one :

you can also have some vintage 60's Harmony or Eko hollow bodies guitars sometimes on ebay if you can wait to find the good one ...

these palms wah are shit !
I've them on 3 of my VOX guitars and sometimes they work almost with no noise depending on pickups and builtin fx combination, and sometimes it's so noisy than you just shout FUCK OFF !
My favorite luthier tried several oils and other chemicals. At first it works great but a few hours later, you're still at the same point : noises are back.
It seems this entire mechanism should be all the time bathing in oils ...

I've talked to Jack from Guitarworks, he said he can improve them (but not always 100%) and something about the oxide wearing off from the pot (which isn't a 'normal' pot)
He also mentioned that there is a 50% rate of them not working due to crappy design.
I love my ultrasonic (and i wear it all the time)

Do they even sound any good in the rare instances that they are functioning?

Hm. I have a Casino with a bigsby on it too.
I'm not knowledgeable about guitars cos I don't play well enough for it to make a difference. But I have 6 guitars and, if I emigrate, I'll probably only take the Vox and the Casino with me. So I guess that's a recommendation of sorts.

I'd strongly recommend the Gretsch. My boy has the 5120 (single cutaway) and it's a winner. People love it wherever he plays. Good luck with your shopping!
