would be cool for somebody to start making these again

sorry to say that, but it is sadly pointless ...
reproduce a 100% clone is impossible (so much specific part) and would be far more expensive than the already expensive 60s one.
more, look at his rivoli "clone" : it is really far from a vintage one. I let you find all the differences ...

Just out of curiosity, how is an aristocrat impossible? The guy's already built a 335 style bass, and since the Aristocrat has no onboard effects, I'd think he could tackle it.

The only differences I see are a deeper set neck and a different neck joint on the back. And what does a past model not being exactly to spec indicate of future works?

I sent him a message and he said
"It's going to be an aristocrat with the ultrasonic inlays. So there won't be any onboard effects"
So, i'm not seeing any problems here.

It may look the same in the end, but it's definitely not going to sound the same. (anyone with a repro Vox Phantom will tell you that)
Different wood, different pickups, and different construction (something tells me there won't be a TT shaped truss-rod in the neck either). Hollowbody Voxes derive their distinct sound from a bunch of different factors, some of which are reproducible, some not. What really bothers me is that this guy has no decent photos of any finished guitars on his site or his kickstarter page (aside from the Epi Bass), and his video is just photos of Sploshette's guitars, and the same Ultrasonic photos we've seen a billion times on the net. This could be the ultimate downfall of his Kickstarter initiative. Get some more examples of your work up there to establish some cred!

All that being said, I actually am looking forward to seeing what this guy comes up with. That Epiphone Bass copy he has on his facebook page looks pretty nice (save for some finish issues on the back, it seems). Hopefully he posts some more photos of his finished work.

Ah, I suppose that's fair enough. I've had a bit of back and forth correspondence with him and I made him promise to alert me to whenever he makes any headway towards a prototype. So you guys will be next the ones to know about it :)
