Private Road. Strange film. Reminded me of Stranger than Paradise for some reason. Ultimately it's the performance of Bruce Robinson - he of Withnail and I fame - that carries it through.

Burma VJ - a documentary/part dramatisation about reporters in Burma who secretly shot footage of the 2007 and got it out of the country so the rest of the world could know what is going on.

It definitely brings the situation home and it is shocking (Prozac posted about Burma on the previous forum).

There was a Q&A afterwards with a Burmese lady who said that the behaviour of the authorities shown in the film is an everyday occurence and that things are worse outside Rangoon. It made me realise that I'm not as well informed as I thought. These things are still going on, it's just that it isn't on the news here.

... and I enjoyed it. I normally wouldn't go to a sci-fi movie so the marketing campaign must be a good one (there's a "humans-only" notice on the phone box near the office I work).

It's pretty difficult to spot Dan. He's in the bar scene (where the Sheriff is drinking and playing cards with Frankie). I think he's the bandit with no lines and a scarf over his face in some scenes (other people play that bandit in other scenes too). And I believe he might even be the corpse dragged around by the bounty hunter in a few scenes too - that can't have been fun.

When I've been to on my trips to see Spindrift shows, I've encountered quite a few people out of that movie. Last June, someone introduced me to the woman who plays the corpse that gets necrophiled. I didn't know what to say.

It's been a great week for French gangster movies, Vincent Cassell is phenomenal in Mesrine, both parts are instant classics

As for the two Jean-Pierre Melville movies, they speak for themselves

Another dark moody number from Jean Pierre-Melville, not a happy ending in sight like the others I've seen this week, good stuff

I think that was the most accomplished of the Melville films I've seen. I couldn't face watching it again though - probably care about the characters too much!

I see there's a difference of opinion on District 9. I admit that, if it had been made as a big budget star-driven movie, it would have been terrible, so I guess there are faults. But hey, I enjoyed it.
