monty python's the meaning of life. it's not holy grail or the life of brian and it's too long, but it's wonderfully surreal at times. just for the *** ed scene at the boy's school ("what's wrong with a kiss BOY?!"), death at the dinner party ("well, that rather puts a gloom on the whole evening"), the projectile vomiting, and the wonderfully gratuitous buxom women in helmets scene -- an all-time classic. hadn't seen it in a long time.

Watched Vanilla Sky -- it was very interesting, but not much of a story. I'm getting tired of scenes that could be real or a dream...

I just got a free code for Blockbuster video, so I'm going to try to watch some more oscar noms.

I'd say that Finnish movie "Bad Family" was pretty very interesting one, I'd recommend. Sad, but funny as hell aswell.

But what comes to US then "The Machinist" was a bloody good thiller!

top film. the jigsaw narrative (a là pulp fiction) has become a bit of a cliché but works really well here. any recommendations re: french cinema?

Recently saw this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0363532/ ; and L'Homme du train by the same director is an excellent French movie. It's got Johnny Halliday in it, a great actor as it turns out.

If you've not seen anything by Truffaut you really should but start with the early black and white stuff, his best by far in my opinion. All his 60s new wave "director as author" comrades are well worth checking out too.

The Three colours trilogy is in French and is supposedly the best thing of the last 20 years to appear on film. It is good (maybe not as superior as many reviewers say), with amazingly beautiful cinematography.

Dunno about much else French movie-wise. Been meaning to get hold of more French movies myself. I do know I can't stand fecking Amelie. Over-twee, heavily stereotyped (bordering on racist) chunk of overdriven sentimentality. I walked out of the cinema after half an hour. And people seem to think telling you they like it is some universally recognised badge of artistic appreciation, including many of my own friends. Arrgghh. It's rubbish, please let's move on from that film - it does not definie world cinema!

This bit of the forum's always full of good suggestions for things to watch. Hope the above helps.
