Another Beach day in California
Under the stars and eucalpytus and in front of the Doric style columns at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA last Friday evening.
The Beach Boys had sold tens of millions of records for Capitol Records years or even decades before the vast majority of us on this board were ever born. (including me) Their greatest hits package "Endless Summer" was the first record I ever bought when I was in middle school. Brian Wilson is a musical genius and to me, even after selling over 100 million records, they still remain one of the most underrated bands of all time. Their early '62 to '65 era (and beyond) stands as some of the greatest achievements in American Rock and Roll. (and we freakin' invented it, so that means something) Their writing, arrangements and vocal harmonizing have stood the test of time and spawned a load of imitators back then.
live in Santa Monica, 1964 (use Youtube link if not embedded)
Little Honda, 1964
They played 33 songs and what is amazing is how immense their back catalog is.
"Girl Don't Tell Me" 1965
"Farmer's Daughter"
Some jaded-too-cool-for-school hipsters may think it's passe to like the Beach Boys. (don't be that person) If you have a chance, I would recommend checking 'em out on this 50th anniversary tour as Brian Wilson is back in the band after 20 years with Mike Love, Al Jardine, David Marks, Mark Johnston with backing from Brian's band, the Wondermints. You will have an opportunity to witness a part of real Rock and Roll history. (and IMO, the greatest American Rock & Roll band ever)
I mean, when was the last time anybody had a chance to see the Beatles perform? (46 years ago...1966)
from Shindig! "Do You Wanna Dance?" Well....do you?

Baby Grandmothers, from 1968
Where the hell have I been? I've dug Parson Sound for quite awhile, but these guys, from Sweden as well, somehow slipped past my radar until recently. I can't believe this is from 1968! Some of the most tripped-out stuff I've ever heard.

Really digging this album. Not a huge fan of either artists' solo work, though I do like Darker My Love, Tim Presley's other band. Ty's got some stuff I can get into, but White Fence is too lo-fi, even for me, and I listen to a lot of lo-fi stuff. But I have 45-year old live Dead tapes that have more clarity of sound in the instruments. 'Hair,' however, rocks the jam session. I'm down with the loose, jammy vibe.
Above is a review of Thursday night's JAMC show in SF. Sure, these guys are doing reunion tours, shun them as you like. However, the Reid brothers really rocked the Fillmore. William Reid's guitar playing just isn't what it used to be, but by the encore he'd really started to get into it. Jim's voice is uncanny, and hasn't faltered, just lost some volume.
The stage monitors have been giving crap to the last three bands I've seen at the Fillmore (BJM included). Jim couldn't hear himself, evident the way he plugged his ears when singing critical points of their old tunes. I think the only thing the band could hear was William's guitar.
The show was fantastic. Audience members crawling across the stage, the Reid brothers bickering, stage equipment falling all over the place... I'm glad I sucked it up and went.
