We were at Outside Lands Fest in GGP in SF last week and maybe it was the young lame festival crowd or maybe it was Jack Black's *meh* performance, (used to love the White Stripes early on) but it made me long for the underground retro surf/garage/mod scene in SF in the early-mid 90s where there were scooter rallies and bands played in small clubs like the Purple Onion and the Chameleon where you drank a lot of beer and just danced your ass off.
Bands like the Phantom Surfers, the Finks, Satan's Pilgrims, The Fallouts, The Mono Men, Trashwomen, Boss Martians, Neptunas, Bomboras, Saturn V, The Mummies, Untamed Youth, etc. comprised this scene. The Makers would drive down from WA in a hearse to play Tom Guido's Purple Onion and they were always late, if they made it at all. Jackie and the Cedrics would travel from Japan to play a bill. There were also great West Coast labels like Estrus, Man's Ruin, Bomp!, Ripoff Records and Dionysus. It was a lot of fun for a while.
The Trashwomen...w/guitarist Elka Zolot ( also the mother of rap artist Kreayshawn)
.
The Finks from LA (before they reformed into the Bomboras)
Jackie and the Cedrics (great surf band from Japan that opened up for the Go-Nuts at BOTH...after that show, my friends and I were encrusted in a film of white powdered sugar as we left the bar. It was hilarious.)
The Go-Nuts (Deke Dickersen, members of Phantom Surfers and others) who are Snack Rock Superheros complete with Snack-a-Pult. They are usually banned from whichever venue is oblivious enough to book them as it usually turns into a snack rock food fight mess.
The Mono Men from Bellingham, Wa. Guitarist/Singer Dave Crider founded the influential Estrus Records label. These guys rocked live.
Satan's Pilgrims live (from Portland, OR) Great to dance to...
Saturn V featuring Orbit, "Pretty Girls" (classic frat rock at is finest)

I had a chance to see this 2 documentaries when they came out last year. Now you are able to able to view in their entirety online. Check 'em out if you have some free time.
Phil Ochs, "There But for the Fortune"
Probably one of the greatest songwriters in our time and in my top 3. (along w/Leonard Cohen and Bob Dylan) Talented yet tragically short life.

Charles and Ray Eames, The Architect and the Painter
Any design fans out there? If you've ever sat in an office or airport chair for hours on end, used a Kodak Instamatic camera or hung a jacket on a wooden ball hanger, you likely have had the works of Charles and Ray Eames of Venice, CA touch your lives at some point.
